SCIENTIFIC NAME(s)
Callinectes toxotes
SPECIES NAME(s)
Giant swimcrab
COMMON NAMES
Giant swimcrab
In Mexico Callinectes toxotes is the most common of this crab genus and is jointly assessed in terms of its fishery. It is described as the largest species in the genus and its last assessment was reported in 201, integrating together the species C. bellicosus and C. arcuatus.
From an economic and ecological point of view, Callinectes crabs are important in the Mexican Pacific and specifically in the Gulf of California. However, some aspects are still poorly described, such as mortality rates, exploitation level, and sizes, among other aspects of these species incidentally captured in shrimp trawling (López-Martínez et al. 2014).
