Rooster venus (Paphia gallus) is present in the Indo-West Pacific Region: from western India to Papua New Guinea; north to Taiwan Province of China and the south China Sea, and south to New South Wales.In India is collected for subsistence in the northern part of the area. Only P. sinuosa is present in the western part of the Indian Ocean; exploitation in this area not known. It is commonly found in intertidal areas in sand and mud (Froese and Pauly 2016).

Ashtamudi estuary is the second largest wetland ecosystem in Kerala state, and covers an area of 6,140ha (61.4km2 / 23.7 square miles). Two fishing methods are used in this fishery: diving and hand-dredging. Both are manual fishing methods that use no mechanical power (Andrews et al. 2014). This fishery was certified by the Marine Stewardship Council system in November 2014.
