SUMMARY

SUMMARY

IDENTIFICATION

SCIENTIFIC NAME(s)

Engraulis encrasicolus

SPECIES NAME(s)

European anchovy

Even though there have been several studies on the population structure of the European Anchovy in the Mediterranean Sea, there is still no certainty if this is a stock unit or a shared stock with other areas (Giráldez et al. 2021). Therefore, here we assumed the division of management units presented by the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) along the Spanish and French coasts in the Mediterranean Sea: Northern Alboran Sea (GSA 01), Northern Spain (GSA 06) and Gulf of Lions (GSA 07) (GFCM 2014)(GFCM 2016).

This fishery, composed exclusively of purse seiners, targets other species, such as mackerel, horse mackerel and gilt sardine (Giráldez et al. 2021).

ANALYSIS

Strengths
  • Management enforces gear and vessel restrictions to access the fishery. Additionally, spatial closures to protect recruitment are in place as well as limits for the fishing effort and a minimum landing size (European Union 2019)(Giráldez et al. 2021)(MAPA 2018)(MAPA 2022).
