Sebastes mentella

SPECIES NAME(s)

Beaked redfish, Deepwater redfish

Beaked redfish (Sebastes mentella) is a slow-growing, long-lived, and late-maturing species found in deep waters. Beaked redfish on the Icelandic slope is treated as a distinct biological stock and management unit and occurs at depths exceeding 400 meters on the western, southern, and southeastern parts of the continental slope. The extent is defined to be completely within the Icelandic 200 NM EEZ and includes 5.a and part of Subarea 14 (MFRI 2022). The extent of this stock and the two other beaked redfish stocks were determined by an ICES working group in 2009 (ICES 2009). The nursery area for this stock is likely on the East Greenland shelf (MFRI 2022).
