The goldstripe sardinella, (Sardinella gibbosa), is a species of fish of the family Clupeidae. It is native to shallow tropical waters of the western Indo-Pacific, living at depths down to 70 m, and being associated with coral reefs. It grows up to 17 cm in length and forms large schools (Whitehead 1985).

The stock structure of Goldstripe sardinella (Sardinella gibbosa) is unknown and the species is distributed through the Indian and West Pacific oceans (Whitehead 1985). The map below regards species’ distribution along the Thai Economic Exclusive Zone. The species is considered as highly commercial in Fisheries sector and is present in most of the markets in southeast Asia including Thailand being an important commercial resource in fish industry (e.g. dried, salted, boiled).
