The stock structure in the NW Atlantic is not yet truly known, a single stock is considered (Steimle et al, 1999; Fariña et al, 2008) but genetic studies are currently being conducted (CCE, undated). The species is assessed and managed as distinct units in Canadian waters: the American angler – Newfoundland Grand Banks (NAFO 3L,N,O,Ps) and the American angler – Scotian Shelf and NE Georges Bank.
