SCIENTIFIC NAME(s)

Sardinella brasiliensis

SPECIES NAME(s)

Brazilian sardinella

COMMON NAMES

Brazilian sardine, Sardinha-verdadeira (Portuguese)

Brazilian sardinella (Sardinella brasiliensis) is widely distributed from Gulf of Mexico to Brazil and northern Uruguay (FAO, 2015). Some recent studies reported the existence of at least two separate populations in south and southern Brazil, although the southern population is not necessarily homogeneous (Schroeder et al. 2022)(Schroeder et al. 2022). However, for assessment and management purposes a single stock is considered in Brazilian waters (Schroeder et al. 2022).

ANALYSIS

Strengths
  • Some recent studies have shed light on the population structure of the species in south and southeastern Brazil (Schroeder et al. 2022)(Schroeder et al. 2022).
