SUMMARY

SUMMARY

IDENTIFICATION

SCIENTIFIC NAME(s)

Callinectes bellicosus

SPECIES NAME(s)

Warrior swimcrab, warrior swimming crab, Cortez swimming crab

The Pacific and Gulf of California distribution of this species appear to constitute a single genetic stock (Munguía-Vega, 2011) and there are signs of a subpopulation in the North of Sonora (Munguía et al. in prep. In DOF, 2014). Sonora and Sinaloa, where three species are caught (Callinectes arcuatus, C. toxotes and C. bellicosus), are the most important states in terms of catches, followed by Baja California Sur, where only C. bellicosus is captured (Cisneros-Mata et al. 2015). Two management plans are developed to manage the fisheries, one for Sinaloa and Sonora (SAGARPA 2014) and a second one for the remaining Pacific coastal states, including Baja California Sur (Castañeda et al. 2015)(INP 2012). Therefore two assessment units are here considered: Eastern Gulf of California and West of Baja California Sur.

ANALYSIS

Strengths
  • A Fishery Management Plan is in place since 2014 for Sinaloa and Sonora. Several management measures are in place.
