Two stocks of silver hake on the U.S. Atlantic coast (a southern and a northern) are assumed for assessment and management purposes, based on differences in morphology, otolith shape, population trends and the habitat interruption at Georges Bank. There are indications however that there is a single population with incomplete mixing over Georges Bank. The relationship with Canadian stocks is also not fully understood (NEFSC, 2006).
