This is a multispecies profile and concerns Australian Blacktip (Carcarhinus tilstoni), Common Blacktip (Carcarhinus limbatus) and Graceful shark (Carcarhinus amblyrhynchoides). As these species are hard to distinguish they are usually treated as a species complex for management purposes. The stock structure of all these species is not fully understood yet. Ovenden (2007) suggested the existence of two genetic stocks for Common Blacktip separated at Cape Wessel, whereas only a single genetic stock was identified for Australian Blacktip. According to results from a more recent study, conducted in north eastern Australia, two distinct northern and southern stocks were identified for both Australian and common blacktips, separated at southern limit of the Great Barrier Reef (Welch et al., 2011); Interspecies hybridization was also found to be occurring between these two species (Morgan et al., 2011; Welch et al., 2011).
